Columbia police arrested a juvenile seen running from the site of a shooting near Hyatt Park Elementary School, off north Main Street, Thursday afternoon. The 16-year-old has been charged with attempted murder, burglary and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime.

Police were called to a house on the 1300 block of Mount Vernon Street shortly before 4 p.m. , police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.

Witnesses said the shooting developed from an argument between the teenager, the male victim and another suspect who is still being sought. The suspects allegedly forced their way into the home and shot the victim. Although he was naked, the victim ran after the suspects when they fled from the house, Timmons said.

The juvenile was seen running near the scene carrying what appeared to be a handgun, Timmons said.

He refused several commands to stop and was tackled at the door of Hyatt Park Elementary by two Columbia police officers, Timmons said. At the time, school staff were inside, but there’s no indication that the young man entered the school or was planning to enter the school.

Police do not know what the two were arguing about. The victim was being treated at Palmetto Health Richland hospital for a gunshot wound to “the head area,” Timmons said. His identity had not been released Thursday night.

The teenager was being held at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
